Which Ads Were The Best, And Worst At The Superbowl

My heart always gets a little warmer when I turn away from the gathering I’m at (who is there to watch football of course) and log on Twitter and visit with my people about the REALLY important stuff. People who say things like:
“I’m here for the ads”
“Are you ready for some… Commercials!?”
So I was pretty excited this year to take a look at the ads and despite the fact that they seemed to have been posted everywhere, I held out to watch them live with the game. …

People Can Meet Each Other Better With Ice Breaker Name Tags.

I love this!  I love it because I am irked by networking events where everyone starts off with ‘what do you do?’, which is an insanely hard question to answer (Penelope just wrote a good post about it).  In fact, I was just laughing with a friend of mine over her impression of herself explaining what she does to her parents.  There are even 2 artists that created a whole series composed of videos of artists explaining to their parents what they do for a living. So it’s maybe safe …

What To Become An Expert In. (Hint: It’s Not Twitter).

A few weeks ago I attended a happy hour for young professionals.  It was the usual array of business owners, marketing people, and tech folks and I was having some great conversations until one lady asked me what I do.
“Social Media strategy” I answered to which she said “oh.  I KNOW how to update Twitter.”  This happens a lot, and it’s ok, but it does bring up a really good point about social media expertise and who businesses should be hiring to complete it. To me, there’s a really distinct …

Bloggers: How To Reach Out To Sponsors.

photo from The Small Object
I have been talking with a lot of bloggers lately that are interested in working with brands but aren’t so sure about how to go about it. Since I come from the other side and help brands find partners online (bloggers, communities, events, etc) I have some good tips for you when you are ready to actually ask a someone to work with you. Here they come:
1) Make a list of people you’d want to work with. This can and should be your dream list. …

Hey Realtors….. Social Networking Tips. Also, You Might Wanna Rethink That Giant Headshot.

(This is part of a series for Realtors)
I’ve been talking with a lot of Realtors lately which is odd since I’m in no way looking to buy a house or anything… they just sort of suddenly were there in my circle of people.  I met a realtor at a networking event and the next thing I knew I was at a young professional realtor event.   The first thing I noticed about them is that real estate folks, as a group, are DRAMATICALLY better looking than most groups as a …

What Role Does Paid Media Play In A Social Media Campaign? A Thought From A Vegas Horse Show.

I happened to be in Las Vegas last week for a horse show and while I was steadily losing money one night at the casino I was thinking about how people can fit paid media into their social media campaigns better.  I had to think of that because if I didn’t I would notice that at one point the guy next to me won $150 on a penny slot and the lady two machines down won $900.  I would look down as they won and say “hey, that’s great!” and …

I work on the Internet. I use the word “blog” all the time and I know when Twitter is down and if Yahoo is trying to hire talent away from other companies. I can work with companies to get themselves to look a little cooler online if they want or tell them if people are complaining about them on Twitter and a lot of other geeky stuff that takes forever to explain. The problem is we didn’t get a one word description over here in online land to describe …
