I’m writing this from the airport in Austin Texas, because I’m stuck here. Stuck because it’s apparently raining ice sideways in the Midwest, stuck because all the flights are way overbooked, and stuck because some sort of higher power may possibly have it in for me this week. I’ve been wearing the same clothes for well over 35 hours and I’ve heard a lot of promises in those hours. I ended up at a hotel that wasn’t on the bedbug registry (are you guys checking your hotels on this site? …

Time and Tide wait for no man, but time always stands still for a woman of thirty.
~Robert Frost
I’m turning 30 this week. I have been composing this post in my head for about a month. First it was going to be all about how fabulous it is to be 30 and how much better life is and all this really positive stuff about how age doesn’t matter and at least I have more money than when I turned 20.
But then I started thinking about how my mother told me …

It snowed so much in Wisconsin this year that I started planning trips to see clients in warmer climates. Even though I work almost entirely online and don’t have to really meet in person very often. Truth is, I was bouncing off the walls because it had been under 30 degrees for about 2 months.
Think about that. Under 30 degrees. 2 months. And that’s generous because most of the time it was actually under 15 degrees. I have officially done every indoor thing that I care to.
So a client asked …

So there’s a site where you can Rent-A-Friend.
The idea is that you can go to this site and rent someone to hang out with you, see a movie with, or shop for a car with you. The friends on the site price themselves (something like $20 an hour) and you pick someone out and presto! Instant friend. Or…. if you remember from Fight Club, Single Serving Friend. It actually is a spinoff of the Japanese sites that are crazy popular where you can rent a friend, rent a family (seriously, …

I’m going to describe a rather painful, and sadly frequent, situation for you. I’m sitting at dinner on a Thursday, texting some old friends of mine that work in the service industry, and excitedly making plans to meet up. It is 7:00 and I’m at dinner because I’m starving from working all day and worked out and now I’m in feed-me-before-I-scratch-someone’s-eyes-out mode. It’s not terribly adorable but I deal with it by begging people to have dinner at 7 instead of 9 like I used to. By 10:30 I’m yawning …

We’re only 4 days into the new year and already things are different. Like, for example, that I’m going to be telling you how my life became not so fun in 2010. The 2010 me wouldn’t have done that. 2010 was a year of Order (see right side of the poster). So much order that it almost made me stop blogging. Order is great, don’t get me wrong it’s just that too much of it can be, well, boring hard to write about. (hence embarrassingly long hiatus from this blog).
So …

I was going to write a post about this film anyway because I couldn’t not. It was that good. It was think-about-it-the-rest-of-the-weekend good. Also, it was rather disturbing so if you’re expecting a pretty ballerina movie, this isn’t it.
I also want to state for the record that I kind of dislike those posts where people relate almost anything to social media like ‘why Tinkerbelle would have used social media’ and ‘what social media lovers can learn from cleaning the bathroom’, but I’m going to relate this film to entrepreneurs because …

I love this! It’s a site where you can create those supercute photo strips without having to be in the same photobooth.
I tried it with the New Jerseyite while I was working at Barriques and he was working at Sundance (our home office has been a little…. cough cough…… what’s the word I’m looking for…. crowded? clausterphobic?) but the pictures are not even remotely cute and he didn’t have the patience to redo them 5 times like I would have liked so I’m opting against posting them here.
Update – the …

The Stork Club ~
“Founded as a speakeasy in the 1920′s, the Stork became the first and last word in elite supper-clubbing. Everyone went there: Jack and Jackie, Marilyn and Joe, The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Hemingway, and Hitchcock.
Each little table sported a discreet telephone, on which you could dial the other tables.”
~ Vanity Fair November
I love the idea of little phones at your table! Someone should do this as a pop up restaurant….
