Friday Funrise: Cabin Edition.

9 July 2010 4 Comments

So, I’m going to a real cabin this weekend.  Last week I was really excited.  The beginning of this week I was really nervous.  I know I’m from Wisconsin and we’re all supposed to have farms and eat bugs and stuff but I guess I missed out on the outdoorsy gene or something.  The cabin belongs to a good friend of the New Jerseyite and his wife so we’re going with them. I already told the New Jerseyite the things that I won’t do, like pee outside or go outside alone in the middle of the night.  Or touch a bug.  He comforted me by telling me that the last time he was there the restaurant they went to had chicken gizzards at the buffet.  So apparently there are things that should be on my “definitely not doing” list that I’m not even aware of yet. Anyway, my Friday Funrise is full of cabin inspired ideas, have a great weekend!

I’m bringing this game because I’ve been dying for an excuse to buy them.  Wouldn’t they be perfect at a dinner party too?I love the 80′s version where it asks questions like “what’s the first video you remember seeing on MTV?”.

Don’t you just love s’mores?  I rarely  get a chance to make them so it was the first thing I got when I was packing.  Here’s a s’mores recipe you can make in the oven.  Oh! And if you’re in New York, check out this bar called CAMP.  My girlfriend Christina and I were there and you can order cook-them-yourself s’mores right to the table.

If outdoorsy really isn’t your gig, I like the idea of this dating site HowAboutWe…. where you can suggest exactly what you DO want to do.   There are some pretty funny ones out there like “how about we go hang out at the beach and spot mullets?”  The owner of the site was in this article about how it’s really interesting that certain kinds of dates are popular at different times.  Ex. taco date -> swing dancing dates -> lobster roll dates.

I am probably going to have to leave my laptop off for most of the weekend, which is actually really good considering I just found this article about “insecurity work” and how checking your emails / traffic / bank account . etc. every 10 minutes is actually insecurity coming out…..  as if we needed another reason to stop doing these things.

I like to make really, really strong coffee when I’m going to be doing anything outdoors.  Isn’t this coffee packaging and name “Hair Bender Blend” awesome?

The designs for these urban picnic boxes (Boxsal -$35) are such a great update from ye olde picnic basket.

Old Chum has a completely worth the while Flickr set of cabin photos if you can’t get away this weekend but want to be inspired by handmade houses!

One of the reasons to cabin it up this weekend is to get next to nature and closer to fresh air and food.  A study of Baltimore neighborhoods found that nearly a fifth of its 630,000 residents live with little or no access to fresh foods — so the city is fixing that with some cool new ideas - love that!

Since we’ll be in the car for a while, here’s a song (hat tip: Prima) that’s definitely going on the driving playlist:

I love cabins! You are very lucky that you get to go to a place like a cabin. My family used to own one until we lived too far away to visit it anymore, I miss it.

Just so you know, I full on took the Uffie song for FIWK’s Music Tuesday this week. And Scott and Aaron both enjoyed it. Nice find, C-Mac/Prima!

Thanks for the great ideas as I begin packing for my first trip out west. Montana here I come, with some fresh Caitlin ideas to make it easier accept being away from all the goodness of the city. Like your suggestion last night about bringing your own coffee since the gas station variety is closer to mud than java.

There is something about cabins that are serene and relaxing (of course, if there’s running water) ;) James and I went to one a couple weeks ago and both agreed, we couldn’t remember the last time we were that relaxed (there was running water, a hot tub, grill and HDTV, so I was all good)!

Speaking of cabins/architecture/houses, peruse this bad boy:
