Read It: Kelly Cutrone’s Book. Because Who Are Non Girly-Girl Business Owners Supposed To Look Up To?

7 April 2010 4 Comments

Kelly Cutrone is sort of my hero.  First of all, there aren’t many female business owners out there that I want to be like.  I mean, it’s not really possible for me to be a Martha Stewart (not crafty enough) or a Kelly Ripa (I’m too grouchy).  I need someone a bit more…. imperfect to look up to.

Most girls like her I think because she’s in the fashion industry but I like her because she’s a real business owner.  She has to deal with day to day insanity, billing, clients paying late and all of the things that most of my female would-be business owner heroes pretend they don’t deal with.   Or maybe they don’t actually deal with it but I definitely do and would like someone to tell me what I’m supposed to do if God forbid a client fires me.

So I sat down yesterday and read her book “If You Have To Cry Go Outside” in 2 hours.  I just blew through it.  There’s some great stuff in there for women who don’t necessarily have their future planned out right down to the type of lace on their wedding dress.  Is it a little tiny anti-getting married?  Yeah.  But there needs to be more out there for girls who want a business, a career, to move away, and to maybe even be a single mom by choice.

It’s certainly not anti-men.  She talks over and over again about the pleasures of great sex and choosing lovers that you have time for. There’s a lot covered in the book from branding to marriage to the top 10 career Don’ts and movies you should watch.

I was already contemplating getting her book, because she not only has this sheik bohemian air about her, but also because it was revealed on her reality show, Kell On Earth, that she no longer conducts interviews w/ potential employees because of her pension for acts of spontaneous meditation. Now if that isn’t a unique personality, I don’t know what is. She knows her (PR) s**t too, so you’ve pushed me over the edge w/ your recommendation Caitlin. I’m off to Amazon now…

Good find. I love her too. She’s real, a bit crass and isn’t afraid to show even the dark sides of running a business. She’s bad ass. I want to read this now :)

Andrea – Glad I sold you on it :) I wish I worked around people who spontaneously meditated…. how cool. But it’s true she really has paid her dues and has been through a ton. You’ll be surprised when you read about how she got her career to where it is.

Grace – You should, it’s a quick read and her personality is so refreshing.

Part of me is so curious to read this. I like Kelly and I think a lot of things she preaches about are so dead on, especially after working in the communications business for several years. I really want to borrow that book.
